Comparison · Updated 30 September 2026

AI receptionist vs a human receptionist, in rupees and hours.

We make an AI receptionist, and we'll still tell you: for a lot of Pakistani businesses the right answer is both. Here's what each one costs, what each one covers, and where the line sits.

Short answer 168 vs ~54 hours

A receptionist in Lahore averages Rs 34,910 a month and covers about 54 hours a week. A voice AI receptionist like ours costs Rs 20,000–30,000 and answers all 168.

A person still wins at the counter. The AI wins on the phone after 7 pm.

What a human receptionist does better

Let's start with the honest part. A good receptionist is worth every rupee, and no software replaces them at the counter.

  • Walk-in customers. They greet people, offer tea, and make a first impression that a phone line can't.
  • Everything that isn't a call. Cash, receipts, files, appointments on paper, the courier at the door.
  • Judgement. An angry regular, a relative of the owner, a complaint that needs a real apology. People handle these better.
  • Knowing your customers. After a year, they know who's who. That's hard to write down.

What an AI receptionist does better

The problem isn't the receptionist. It's the phone. Calls don't only come between 9 and 6, and they don't wait until someone is free.

  • After hours. Property buyers call after seeing an ad at night. Patients call when the pain starts. Hotel guests call from the motorway. A receptionist has gone home.
  • When they're busy. While your receptionist is with a customer, the second call rings out. The AI picks up on the first ring every time.
  • The same questions, 40 times a day. Fees, timings, location. The AI answers them from the details you give it, the same way every time, without getting tired.
  • A record of everything. Every call is recorded with a transcript, and every lead lands on your WhatsApp with the caller's name and number.

The cost, worked out honestly

At Rs 34,910 a month, a receptionist in Lahore costs about Rs 4.19 lakh a year in salary alone. Awaaz Starter is Rs 20,000 a month; with a one-time setup of Rs 15,000 to 20,000, the first year comes to about Rs 2.55 to 2.6 lakh. Pro, at Rs 30,000 a month, comes to about Rs 3.75 to 3.8 lakh.

But comparing salary to subscription misses the point, because they're not doing the same job. The better question is: how many calls do you miss now, and what is one of them worth? If a missed buyer is worth Rs 50,000 to you, one saved call a month pays for any plan. Try your numbers in the missed-call calculator.

The setup most businesses end up with

Keep your receptionist for the counter. Let the AI take the calls they can't:

  1. Before 9 and after 6, when the office is closed.
  2. Sundays, Eid and leave days.
  3. Busy moments, when a second or third call comes in at once.

Awaaz answers on the same SIM number and WhatsApp your customers already call, so nothing changes for them. Your receptionist sees every AI booking on the dashboard the next morning.

When you don't need an AI receptionist

If you get a handful of calls a day, all during office hours, and your receptionist always picks up, you probably don't need one. Save the money. It pays off when calls come after hours, in busy bursts, or from ads you're paying for.

FAQ

AI or a person, asked plainly.

What is a receptionist's salary in Pakistan?

Indeed puts the average receptionist salary in Lahore at about Rs 34,910 a month, based on 237 reported salaries (17 September 2026). Karachi and Islamabad are usually a little higher. That covers office hours only, usually six days a week.

Is an AI receptionist cheaper than a human one?

For answering the phone, yes. Awaaz costs Rs 20,000 a month for 300 minutes of calls, or Rs 30,000 for 700, plus a one-time setup. Over a year that's roughly Rs 2.55 to 3.8 lakh, against about Rs 4.2 lakh in salary for a receptionist in Lahore, and the AI answers around the clock.

Can an AI receptionist replace my receptionist completely?

Usually not, and it shouldn't try. A person greets walk-in customers, handles cash and files, and makes judgement calls. An AI receptionist replaces one part of the job: answering the phone, especially after hours, on Sundays and when your staff are busy.

Do callers know they are talking to an AI?

Awaaz speaks natural Urdu like a trained receptionist. If a caller asks, it tells the truth. You can hear the exact voice in the sample calls before you decide.

What happens when a caller wants to talk to a person?

It doesn't argue. It says someone will call back and sends the owner a red WhatsApp alert with the caller's number, so a person can take over.

Can I use both?

Yes, and most businesses should. Your receptionist answers when they're free; the AI takes the calls they can't: after hours, during lunch, on Sundays and Eid, and when two calls come at once.
