Why is the average below the minimum wage?

The federal budget for 2026-27 raised the minimum monthly wage for unskilled workers from Rs 37,000 to Rs 40,700 (Daily Pakistan, 12 June 2026). Every city average above is lower than that.

We think there are two reasons. Indeed's numbers come from job ads and salaries people report, so part-time and trainee posts pull the average down. And some of those figures were posted before the July raise. Either way, if you're hiring a full-time receptionist today, plan on at least Rs 40,700. Provinces notify their own rates, so check yours too.

What does a receptionist really cost the business?

The salary is only the start. A receptionist working 9 to 6, six days a week, covers about 54 of the 168 hours in a week. That's roughly a third.

Then there's leave. Sick days, a wedding in the family, the week before Eid. On those days someone else picks up the phone, or nobody does. A missed call leaves no trace unless someone checks the call log, so it's easy to think you miss fewer than you do.

To answer the phone around the clock with people, you'd need about four receptionists on shifts, if each works around 48 hours a week. At the Lahore average that's about Rs 1.4 lakh a month. At the minimum wage, it's closer to Rs 1.63 lakh.

How does that compare with an AI receptionist?

Here's one receptionist, a 24/7 desk staffed by people, and our own AI receptionist side by side. We've marked ours, and the walk-in row is there on purpose.

When is a human receptionist the better hire?

More often than an AI company would like to admit. If most of your customers walk in, a person at the desk does things software can't.

  • They greet people. Tea, a seat, a first impression. A phone line can't do that.
  • They handle the paperwork. Cash, receipts, files, the courier at the door.
  • They use judgement. An angry regular or the owner's relative needs a person, not a script.
  • They learn your customers. After a year they know who's who, and that's hard to write down.

And if you get a handful of calls a day, all in office hours, and your receptionist always picks up, you don't need an AI receptionist. Save the money.

Where does an AI receptionist fit, then?

On the phone, in the hours your receptionist isn't there. Awaaz by OMA Tech Studio answers on the same SIM number and WhatsApp your customers already call, in Urdu and English, 24/7. It takes the caller's details, sends you a WhatsApp alert, and keeps a recording and transcript of every call.

The usual setup is both: your receptionist handles the counter, and the AI takes calls after 6, on Sundays and Eid, and whenever two phones ring at once. For the full cost breakdown, see AI receptionist cost in Pakistan or the AI vs human receptionist comparison.
